What are people good at?
While difficult topics may arise, focusing on what people care about and are passionate makes it easier for people to work with support workers, housing management teams, and others.
How can we work differently to create meaningful changes for the people we support? This course looks at ways frontline workers can build and sustain positive working relationships with people engaged with housing, homelessness and care services, introducing key concepts like building relationships and finding ways to share power.
Traditional methods can often focus on problems and shortcomings. No one wants constant reminders of their struggles or areas to improve on. Strength-based approaches give people power by respecting what they can do and trusting that they know best what will help.
Strengths-based working asks: What are people good at? What resources do they have? What can they be proud of? What gives them strength?
This one-day course is a facilitator-led training programme that draws on Platfform’s 30-year experience of working with people with varied needs.
We explore how problem focused ways of working can be a barrier to thriving. It provides an overview of how our understanding of mental health has changed over time and provides strategies and tools for how we can better support peoples’ needs through building positive relationships, recognising strengths and sharing power.
The session is a process of reflection and learning about how to draw on the positives of the systems we work in, whilst navigating the challenges they can pose.
