Peer Mentor accredited training

Available at both level 1 and level 2 to any young people aged 14 and above to help them learn the skills they need to provide informal peer support safely.

Delivered over 2-3 days, this training is an excellent way to empower young people, create a network of champions who can look out for other young people and is a great way to provide development opportunities for young people who may be interested in a future career in health and social care.

Non-accredited options are also available as well as bespoke training for any organisations needing support to develop a peer mentoring framework.

peer mentoring for schools

How does it work?

The course is taught within 12 hours over 2 days or 4 sessions across 2-4 weeks.

The training is assessed through a workbook containing several written questions per topic. Every session will cover new areas of learning and will prepare the course member to complete the tasks within the workbook. If additional support is needed, the tutor will be available during the delivery to assist and at the end of each session to go over any questions.

The peer mentoring training can be delivered to a maximum of 12 young people at any one time. This can take place at your school or organisation at a date and time that is convenient for you.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the training, attendees can volunteer as a qualified peer mentor or help others in their school or community as a peer mentor.

Qualifications

If they pass the training as assessed by the tutor, by a second assessor from Adult Learning Wales, and by an external assessor from Agored Cymru they will achieve a qualification at level 1. Level 1 qualifications are considered equivalent to achieving GCSE grades 3, 2, or 1.

Peer Mentoring skills

These are relevant to health and social care, as well as education. Learning these will allow course members to use their own experiences to support others in their recovery, development or learning. This means it can prepare young people for work or further training/education in that area.

Transferable skills

This training itself is not specific to mental health, so can be applied to all sorts of environments (as covered in the training), although many examples in the course are relevant to mental health because of Platfform Wellbeing’s expertise in this area.
